Home Style: Mordecai Bungelow
Sarah Rice and Jon Scott live in the Mordecai area of Raleigh, NC. Sarah Rice is an archivist and Jon Scott is a conservation project manager. They both work in downtown Raleigh. A quality day for them would consist of riding bikes, hanging out with friends, cooking up a tasty dinner and a drinking tea while relaxing in their cozy abode.
What/Who is your design inspiration?
I love the mountains, libraries, blue skies, stormy clouds, the Swedish, the French (ironic because Jon Scott loves frogs, the amphibian), and museums. Mix that together; add some cat fur and you have our aesthetic.

Do you have a personal philosophy of design?
Yes. Clean lines and simplicity. I may or may not follow that all the time. Oh, and excess sucks…Unless it’s cheese.
Are there any magazines/blogs/websites that you follow for inspiration? Why do you follow them?
I frequent ReadyMade magazine, design*sponge, apartment therapy, and Martha Stewart. Most of these focus on organization, arrangement, and simplicity.

Are there any particular stores or websites that you love to get your pieces from? Any local or NC places?
I wish there were more affordable places in NC; or rather, I wish we felt more comfortable shelling out more money for furniture. We do love Ikea, truth be told. NC State University surplus has the occasional gem (like our red Reynolds Coliseum chairs).
Do you have any favorite artists (local, North Carolina or otherwise)?
Stephanie Statham. Not only is she a great friend, but a fantastic artist. She is immensely talented and does some beautiful work with mixed media/collage. Our friend Geoff Wood is an amazing photographer and we hope to purchase a print from him one day. We have many talented friends, it’s really ridiculous. We would love to support them more; it’s definitely a goal of ours.
What would you change about your space?
I wish the floor plan were a little more open. Most of all, I would love to re-do the kitchen to make it more functional. We both do a lot of cooking.
What is the best bargain you’ve ever gotten/are most proud of?
I do love those red Reynolds Chairs. They were $30 – which breaks down to $10 a seat. AMAZING!

Do you have any design tips?
Get rid of the clutter.
Have furniture that fits your space.
What is your favorite room?
Hmmm, that’s a tough one. I might have to go with our home office/studio/productivity center. We gave it a full-on overhaul earlier this year and it went from eyesore to very functional (yet stylish) in one weekend. I love the color of paint we chose and I love how we configured the desk. It’s an L-shape. I feel like I get stuff done when I’m in that room; even if I’m just checking my Facebook.

Do you have any special collections?
Well, our Stephanie Statham collection is growing. At first I would just buy her small prints (and save the birthday cards she gave me), but we bought two larger (compared to postcard size) pieces from her this year and we love them. I am also really drawn to postcards of historical portraits (I guess you can blame that on the history degrees). I have Abe Lincoln framed on the Steph wall – I love it. I have a George Washington I don’t have up yet; I haven’t found the right frame or spot in the house for.

What is your favorite thing in your home?
It might just be those Reynolds chairs. I love them.
If money and time were no object what would you do with/splurge on for your space?
I would re-do our kitchen. It’s not nearly as efficient as it could be as far as workspace goes. As far as an item goes, I would love to have an old card catalog. They are everywhere at my work (I work in an archives) and I imagine them in my home constantly. I’d probably get fired if I tried to take one home.
