Road Trip: Manteo

Any trip to the Outer Banks for me includes a stop in Manteo. After picking up a tasty (read here: high calorie and completely worth it) drink at the coffee shop on Sir Walter Raleigh Street, I find it easy to amble for an hour or two in the neighboring areas. Sometimes I’ll browse through the many shops, while other times I like to check out the very informative weather flag tower by the town square. Occasionally, I find myself drawn to the boardwalk, studying the birds, fish, and people walking by.

Once I’m done with the downtown area, I usually head out to the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island. Every time I go I think I must have missed a turn, but eventually I see my destination and am glad I made the visit. And while I don’t spend a lot of time at the aquarium, it is always worth my while to check out the sharks, otters, frogs, fish, and touching tanks full of rays, starfish, and hermit crabs.

I suppose that one of these times, I’ll visit the Maritime Museum, check out the Elizabethan Gardens, watch “The Lost Colony” historical outdoor drama, or walk abound the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. But so far, I’ve found my time in Manteo is full…and well-spent.
