Fashion Resolutions

I’ve never – repeat, never - been one for New Year’s resolutions.  Sure I get caught up in the excitement, sentiment and glitter of the holiday, and usually jot down something resembling a list, albeit in crude form (back of receipt, anyone?).  But keeping said list?  Not a chance.  And I’m a list-maker.

2009 will be different.  I’m composing a list of resolutions I can - no want - to keep: Fashion resolutions.  Also included are some I’d suggest if you’re still on the hunt for resolutions you can get behind, or broke all the ones you made on New Year’s Eve and ready for a new list.

My resolutions

Pick a “look.”  I do it every year.  And every year I get a bit side-tracked.  I’m going to give it another go with a signature look falling somewhere between French ingénue and Downtown doyenne, much like this girl-about-town, pictured on The Sartorialist (ahhhh, my daily inspiration) has managed to capture.

I will get the hang of layering.  And pattern mixing while I’m at it.  That’s all part my insouciant look.   I’ve long-since admired the effortless look of stripes and florals pulled together with a tough belt.

I’ll invest in a traffic-stopping pair of stilettos.  (OK, I’ll invest in another pair.)

Accessories really do make the woman.  I’m promising right here and now to be more diligent in wearing them.  Bangles, scarves, rings (on two fingers, at least) and a bib necklace (so right for spring) – though not all at once – will make their way on to my body.

I will remain up-to-date with my glossies, though not married to them.

And for those looking to add to their list:

Purge unwearable clothing.  Ahhhh, the reclaimed closet space.  Not to mention the donation made to a shelter or Goodwill.  And while we’re at it; organize your closet space.

Embrace color.  Yes, even though black is the new black and spring is subdued.  A little color will kick S.A.D. right out of your system.

Love for fashion and style possessed will win over practicality, but in an appropriate manner.  Sure it’s cold, but there’s no reason not to sport a chic wool minidress with the right trimmings.

Wear (at least) one thing you thought you couldn’t.  The caveat here being something you shouldn’t wear (too-tight jeans, peg-leg acid wash jeans – ahem, Mrs. Cruise – or net shirts) is still a don’t.  But hitting the town in a feather headband, splashy pumps or a maxi dress are all do’s.  Personal style is enviable – always.
