Mckinney Style (Part 2)
Welcome back, to the “streets” of Mckinney!
I really restrain myself because every time someone walks by my desk with cute shoes or a snazzy top I want to ask for a picture. I’ve thought it would be hilarious if I set up the camera and then got in the picture with them, but I think I’m making people uncomfortable enough as it is. I really owe each of the following McKinneyites a big thank you for indulging me and answering constant emails asking for their “style quotes”, age and where they live. No wonder I eat lunch alone… But I especially have to thank Rocky. As a year long veteran of wardrobe remix myself, his witty quote and detailed list of each garments’ ancestry is something I could curl up with on a rainy day and read over and over. I Love it!
These dear co-workers always look put-together, and I’m delighted to showcase their style. Inspiration awaits you.

Rocky, 35 – Durham
“Like Donna Summer, I work hard hard for my money – yet need to feel comfortable doing it. Unlike Donna Summer, I can’t work easily in a Halston spaghetti-strap disco gown and platform pumps. But I’m not one to roll out of bed into a pair of “fat” jeans and a colorful, oversized sweater either.
Maybe its my Virgo-ness, but a lot of thought and preparation goes into my casual-day ensembles.
After deconstructing what I’ve covered-up my nakedness with today, I realized that it’s not just a solitary effort that made all this magic possible. It truly took a vast network of retail commerce and personal support for me to pull this off. Here’s the list….
- Fresh New Haircut by stylist Ashleigh Harris, Bella Trio Salon & Day Spa
- Water Wax 03 Defining Pomade hair product by Redken (from my hairstylist friend, Sara)
- Future – E Facial Moisturizer by L’Oreal (from Walgreen’s)
- Truth by Calvin Klein Fragrances (from Macy’s)
- Sunglasses by anonymous 5 year-old in Chinese Sweatshop
- Red Vintage style T-shirt by The Gap (sale rack)
- Black Cotton Hoodie w/ Stainless-Steel studs & Metallic Foil Silk-Screen detail & Molded-Alloy Skull Zipper Pull by Affliction (from Nordstrom Rack)
- Jeans by 7 For Mankind (from Saks Off 5th, hemmed to fit my 30” inseam by L & A Tailoring on University Avenue in North Park, San Diego, CA – ask for Minh, make sure to request a “New York Hem” to preserve the distressed detailing of the original hem)
- Patch, sewn in back of jeans to cover up a hole in a very conspicuous spot by my boyfriend, Shawn
- Black Suede sneakers with white nylon detail by PUMA (from Nordstrom Rack)
- Black Digital Timepiece on Studded Leather-Cuff Wrist Band by FOSSIL (from FOSSIL Outlet)
- Red Buddha Beads by Lady of the Lake New Age Book Store in North Park, San Diego CA and re-strung by my sister, Monica with the help of my boyfriend, Shawn after the original band snapped a week before Christmas – a total catastrophe
Not seen in this picture:
- Black Canvas Belt with White Silkscreen Greek-Key pattern & Black Brushed-Aluminum Metal Buckle by Vans (from Vans outlet)
- White Tube Sock with Black Swoosh detail by Nike (from Nike Outlet)
- Black Cotton Bikini-Cut Underwear by Nicole Miller (from TJ Maxx)
That’s right, Bikini-Cut! Take that, Donna Summer.

Jenny – Chapel Hill
“What I love most about knitting is having something to do with my hands. But ending up with a one-of-a-kind item is a close second. I knitted this sweater using yarn my mother-in-law sent me for Christmas and a pattern from zephyr style. My jeans are from Lucky and my boots were a hand-me-down from a friend (why she didn’t want them I’ll never understand).”

Chelsie, 32 – Durham
“This really is my standard work ensemble. I try to look cute but if it’s not comfortable, I don’t wear it. I love, love jeans and you will pretty much see me in them every day. This pair – Joe’s Jeans, Honey cut. I bought them off ebay and they were a steal! I tend to layer with my tops because I never know if this place is going to be hot or freezing. The orange and white stripe tank is from the Gap and the cardigan is an old thrift store buy. The boots are Clarks. The necklace is a Chelsie original.”

Anna – Durham
“I typically wear whatever is clean, and whatever clothes I can borrow from more fashionable friends. Slim jeans, vests, and men’s shoes seem to be what I’ve been drawn to lately. Scarves too. Scarves are great.”

Lindsley, 23. – Durham
“While I wouldn’t generally characterize my style as “provocative,” wearing a Duke shirt in an office overwhelmingly comprised of UNC and NC State fans definitely qualifies. In a normal week though, I switch it up between jeans, sweaters and my 6-year old converse all-stars and wrap dresses with boots. Since I grew up in San Diego, it makes me sad I can’t wear open-toed shoes all year round anymore.”
Melissa, 29 – Cary
“I don’t know much about what the world thinks of fashion, but I know what I like. While I don’t normally pay attention to what clothes I wear, I have an Imelda Marcos fascination with shoes. Currently, my favorites are a red pair of Camper “twin” boots, trout-colored Kensie slides, and black Frye kick-ass triple buckle boots.”

Everybody is so stylin! Especially my pretty friend Chelsie!!
