Eastern Triangle Farm Tour

The 5th Annual Eastern Triangle Farm Tour is coming up on Sat. & Sun. Sept 18 & 19, from 1 to 5 PM.  This is a great way to learn about regional agriculture in general, and in particular about where some of the best local food comes from.
From [...]

Saxapahaw General Store

The aisles are lined with STP motor oil and Seventh Generation soaps.  The coolers are stocked with Gatorades and Goat Lady Dairy’s local organic cheeses.  The freezers are full of frozen Snickers ice-cream bars and Cane Creek Farm grass-fed meat.  The shelves offer Starburst candies and The Accidental Baker’s artisan crackers and granolas.  This is the Saxapahaw General Store, the gas-station gourmet food mart and restaurant that is generating lots of [...]

Coming soon to Raleigh: PieBird!

Who doesn’t love pie? I mean, think of all the yummy stuff you can tuck in between two pie crusts. Fruit, chocolate, custards, coconut, even meats and veggies. Hello, chicken pot pie.
My dream pie? An eggy, cheesy, bacon-y concoction with more bacon on top.
Give me a fork.
So it goes without saying that I’m super-excited about [...]

Handmade Chocolate From Mountains to Sea

Whenever we head out west to Asheville, one of my favorite stops, in addition to the Early Girl Eatery and Malaprops Bookstore, is The Chocolate Fetish. Everything there is handmade, and everything is GOOD. Beyond good.
With Valentine’s Day around the corner (and we all know the real reason for V-Day is to eat chocolate), I thought [...]

NOFO at the Pig Will Cure What Ails You

All of this ridiculously cold (and WINDY) weather has me in a funk. So for a little cheer, I visited one of my favorite spots in Raleigh, NOFO at the Pig.
And then I figured, hey, I’ll stick around for lunch so I can post about the entire NOFO experience for indieNC. All in the name [...]

Winter Farmers Market = Happy Belly

A trip to the State Farmers Market always puts me in the mood to cook. Especially during the summer, when you can’t walk two feet without coming face-to-face with a mountain of ripe tomatoes, corn-on-the cob or peaches. Or in late spring, when every other booth is handing out strawberry samples. And don’t even get [...]

Urban Harvest Greensboro

(Photo courtesy of Urban Harvest Greensboro, from their website)
We’ve been pleased to see posts on the IndieNC blog about sustainable agriculture, especially support of sustainable farming in NC as well as urban gardening, because it reminds us that there are like-minded people out there for whom “local” and “fresh” (and often “organic”) are synonymous with [...]

Meet Your Veggie Maker

As we become more aware of the ecological benefits of eating local, the availability of local produce is also increasing. During winter months, however, it’s more difficult to source local goods. Some farmer’s markets stay open through the winter, but if there’s not one near you, there are online ordering options.

If a CSA share seems [...]

Scratch Bakery

Phoebe Lawless is the baker behind Scratch, a Durham start-up that is garnering widespread attention (see recent mention and recipe in Bon Appetit magazine).  And deservedly so, as she creates some of the best pies and pastries I’ve ever had.  And it’s not just the extraordinary crusts, it’s the fillings [...]
